The chateau of Vranov was originally a Gothic castle dating from the beginings of the 12th century. It is located on a high cliff over the river Dyje. The castle was built as a part of the defensive system between Moravia and Austria. In the end of the 16th century the owner Maxmilian from Gitrichštejn circulated the castle by new renaissance buldings. The renovation of the castle into a chateau and its Baroque appearance has been attributed to the House of Althan, which undertook this work according to a project of J. B. Fischer of Erlach in the 17th century. The chateau belongs to the most visited chateau in the Czech republic.
