Mikulov

The picturesque town on the border with Austria which is an important wine centre of the Czech Republic. It has a lot of wine cellars and a museum of viticulture, too. In the skyline of the town stand out the castle (renaissance and baroque building, arranged at the beginning of the 18th century) with conserved tower and battlements from the former Romanesque castle. In the Jewish quarter are the Baroque synagogue and the Jewish cemetery with 4000 gravestones. Mikulov was the seat of Moravian provincial rabbis. Holy Hill (Svatý kopeček) is a pilgrimage site with a chapel. Traditional pilgrimages have been made here since 1622. In the town centre, just off the square, is a Loretan Chapel, one of the first of its kind outside Italy.
